Scheuren Announces $1.76 Million Contract to Replace Niantic Road Bridge

HARRISBURG –Rep. Donna Scheuren (R-Montgomery) today announced a $1,761,780 contract has been awarded to replace the bridge carrying Niantic Road over the western branch of Perkiomen Creek in Douglass Township, Montgomery County. 

The replacement bridge will be a 70-foot, single-span structure built along a horizontal alignment like the existing bridge. The new bridge will accommodate two 11-foot travel lanes and 5-foot shoulders. The project also includes reconstruction of approximately 334 feet of approach roadway and guiderail replacements and will extend into Washington Township in Berks County.

“This project is an important investment in our local infrastructure and will address the needs of a bridge that has served our communities for nearly a century,” Scheuren said. “Replacing this structure will improve safety, enhance the reliability of this roadway and ensure residents and motorists can continue traveling this important connection between Montgomery and Berks counties.”

Originally built in 1931, the existing bridge is a double-span structure measuring 58 feet in length and has a posted weight restriction of 31 tons for single vehicles and 40 tons for combined vehicles.

A detour will be necessary during construction. Motorists will be directed to use Hoffmansville Road (Route 100) and Congo-Niantic Road. Drivers should anticipate additional travel time while construction is underway.

“Maintaining and upgrading our roads and bridges is essential to keeping our communities connected,” Scheuren added. “I appreciate PennDOT's investment in this project and look forward to seeing this long-needed improvement move forward.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) awarded the project contract to Column Construction Inc. of Glenmoore, Chester County. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026, with physical completion anticipated in late 2027 or early 2028.
